On June 12, 2001, in accordance with the requirement of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, Sichuan Khams-bod Research Center (the Center) was formally established in Sichuan Academy of Social Sciences. As the professional research institution for the purpose of implementation of the above Committee’s spirit of strengthening the development and stability of the Tibetan area in Sichuan, the Center is also the first special comprehensive organization for academic research on the Khams-bod region (i.e. such Tibetan area of Sichuan)as the study object. It mainly works on the theoretical, fundamental and proactive research on the Khams-bod region as well as other relevant Tibetan areas, relating to the history, culture, development and stability, along with such applied studies of discovering, transforming, planning on historic cultural and tourism resources of such Tibetan places in Sichuan.


Key Discipline of Khams-bod Research was approved in October 2008 by Sichuan Party Committee publicity department. With the positive endeavor of the Center’s scientific research personnel and other researchers from related disciplines, we are following the overall objective: “based on foundation research, focus on applicable and prospective study; strive to make the Khams-bod research serve for the needs of social development and stability in such Tibetan areas and enable the Academy’s Khams-bod research play the role of a think tank on the promotion of long-term stability and scientific development in Tibetan areas of Sichuan; and academically our research shall occupy a leading position of in the Khams-bod research fields both at home and abroad”. The Discipline has attained relatively large progress in the set-up of scientific research projects, result publication, team construction, international academic exchanges, etc.


Main directions of the Khams-bod study as a key discipline: first, the research on the social stability and development in Tibetan areas of Sichuan, which mainly conducts studies of relationships between economic development and social stability in Khams-bod region,  religious belief and national unity, etc.; second, the studies of Khams-bod social history and culture, which mainly conducts such research on issues related to explore and apply Khams-bod social and historical culture,  cultural resources in such Tibetan areas as well as the academic innovation on the Khams-bod culture study.


Currently, the Discipline has totally nine full-time scientific research staff, including tow researchers, one associate researcher, six assistant researchers, excluding more than 10 contract research fellows.
