On December 22, sponsored by the Chinese Geographical Society, co-organized by the Yangtze River Branch of the Chinese Geographical Society, and the Mountainous Branch of the Chinese Geographical Society and undertook by Sichuan Normal University and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, the "Yangtze River Economic Zone Construction and Geographical Science Development Forum(2019)" was held in Chengdu. The theme of the forum is "Developing Geographical Science and Building a Beautiful Yangtze River”. More than 30 domestic well-known experts and scholars in the fields of geography, ecology, regional development and other disciplines from more than 10 universities and research institutes including the Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Central China Normal University, Anhui Normal University, Southwest University, Sichuan Normal University, and Chengdu University of Technology participated in the forum and exchanged views on major issues such as the construction of the Yangtze River Economic Zone and the strategic pattern of river basin protection, and the development and governance of land and space. The opening ceremony of the forum was chaired by Du Wei, Vice President of Sichuan Normal University.
At the opening ceremony, Wang Mingyi, President of Sichuan Normal University, Jiang Zhihong, Vice President of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and Zhang Guoyou, Secretary-General of the Chinese Geographic Society, delivered speeches. Xia Jun, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dean of the Institute of Water Safety of Wuhan University, Yu Guirui, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Researcher of the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Song Changqing, Vice President of the Chinese Geographic Society and Zeng Gang, Dean of the Urban Development Research Institute of East China Normal University, made invited lectures on“Systematic Thinking and Practice of Protecting Green Development of the Yangtze River: Opportunities and Challenges”, “Long-term Monitoring and Development Trend of Ecological Environment”, “Geographical Change in the Era of Sudden Change”, and "Coordinated Development Capability Evaluation and Promotion Strategy of Cities in the Yangtze Economic Zone".
During the theme discussion phase of the forum, Luo Huailiang, Dean of the School of Geography and Resource Sciences of Sichuan Normal University, and Jiang Tong, Dean of the School of Geography of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, respectively made theme speeches on "Based on Sichuan, Lead Regional Geography Education, and Serve the Construction and Development of the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River and "Be Demand-Oriented and Develop and Strengthen Geographical Science".
Experts and scholars participating in the meeting discussed and exchanged ideas and reached consensus on gathering the teaching capabilities of geography disciplines in the Yangtze River Basin, enhancing their geography service capabilities, and promoting the sustainable development of the Yangtze River basin. They jointly signed the "Proposal on Innovative Initiatives for Strengthening the Teaching Capabilities of Geography Disciplines in the Yangtze River Basin". They propose that universities and research institutes in the Yangtze River Basin continue to strengthen the innovation development of the teaching system of geography, strengthen the exchange of geography teaching and scientific research, and explore the establishment of a science and education platform sharing mechanism, etc., to provide a guarantee of geological intellectual resources for the construction of the Yangtze River Economic Zone and make systematic contributions to the prosperity of geographical development.
The "Yangtze River Economic Zone Construction and Geographical Development Forum(2019)" is an innovative practice of focusing on the country's major needs, enhancing the ability of geography services, promoting the coordinated and innovative development of science and education, and promoting the high-quality and sustainable development of land and space in the Yangtze River Basin.
